Vishay carries the name of a destroyed village. Its founder, Felix Zandman, was a Polish-Lithuanian Jew who survived the Holocaust hidden for over a year in a pit dug beneath a peasant family's house, where a relative kept his mind alive by teaching him mathematics. After the war he became a physicist, invented the bonded-foil precision strain gauge and the PhotoStress technique for visualizing mechanical stress, and in 1962 founded a components company built on that precision-foil technology — naming it Vishay after Vishay (Veisiejai), the Lithuanian village where his family had lived and died. The world's largest resistor maker is, in its name, a memorial: precision measurement born from a survivor's wartime mathematics lessons.

Vishay is unusual in spanning almost the entire "everything but the main chip" bill of materials: it is the world's largest resistor maker and simultaneously a maker of capacitors, inductors, diodes, MOSFETs and optoelectronics. Most competitors specialize in either passives or discrete semiconductors; Vishay does both at scale.
