Weidmann Group — the world's leading transformer insulation specialist — also operates Weidmann Medical Technology, a division making specialty papers for pharmaceutical primary packaging and medical device sterile barrier packaging. The same cellulosic paper expertise that produces thermally upgraded kraft paper for 345kV transformers also produces moisture-barrier papers for pharmaceutical blister packs and gamma-sterilization-compatible papers for surgical instrument pouches. A 147-year-old Swiss family transformer company is simultaneously inside power substations (insulating windings in 500kV grid transformers) and inside pharmaceutical supply chains (packaging sterile devices in hospitals). The cellulose fiber manufacturing platform serves infrastructure that lights cities AND healthcare supply chains that saves lives — entirely separate applications from the same paper science.

Weidmann's proprietary MOULD simulation software for transformer insulation design is installed at every major transformer OEM engineering team globally. Before manufacturing a large power transformer, engineers use MOULD to model the electric field distribution in the insulation system, optimize pressboard geometry, and ensure adequate dielectric clearances at rated voltage. The software embeds Weidmann's material properties and design norms into the OEM's design process. Once a transformer design is optimized around Weidmann materials in MOULD, switching to a competitor's insulation requires redesigning the entire insulation geometry and recertifying the transformer type — a multi-year process. Weidmann has thus achieved a deeper lock-in than a typical physical material supplier: it is embedded in transformer intellectual property at the design stage, making every transformer built with MOULD a Weidmann customer for 40 years of replacement insulation parts and service.
Weidmann Electrical Technology AG ↗Origin2023
Weidmann Electrical Technology was founded in 1877 in Rapperswil-Jona, Switzerland by Heinrich Weidmann as a cotton spinning mill. The company pivoted to specialty paper production in the late 19th century as Swiss textile mills declined. As electrification accelerated in the early 20th century and power transformer demand grew, Weidmann specialized in kraft paper and pressboard insulation for transformers — an extremely demanding application requiring paper with controlled density, electrical resistance, and heat resistance. The Weidmann family has owned the company continuously for 147 years through four generations. The company expanded globally but remained family-private — operating in 14 countries while avoiding the quarterly reporting pressures that have disrupted other specialty industrial companies. Weidmann's 2018 acquisition of Transformerboard division of ABB consolidated its dominance.
