West Pharmaceutical Services was founded in 1923 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as The West Company -- a rubber products manufacturer that made closures for household jars and industrial containers. The pivot to pharmaceutical packaging came as the pharmaceutical industry grew through the 1930s-1950s and required validated, sterile closures for injectable drugs. West developed proprietary rubber formulations and manufacturing processes to meet FDA requirements for drug contact materials, building a specialized customer base among pharmaceutical manufacturers who needed components with proven extractables and leachables profiles. The company renamed itself West Pharmaceutical Services in 1998 to signal the transition from commodity rubber to pharmaceutical service provider. The Daikyo joint venture (established 1981) added Japanese precision polymer capabilities, ultimately producing Crystal Zenith COP vials and syringes that West now sells as a premium alternative to glass for sensitive biological drugs. A 1923 Philadelphia rubber jar closure company became the company that sealed 2 billion COVID-19 vaccine doses in 2021 -- the same rubber formulation chemistry that kept household products fresh now separates pandemic vaccines from the atmosphere.
