Origin2023
Woodside Petroleum (now Woodside Energy Group) was incorporated in 1954 and named after Woodside, a small town in South Australia -- chosen because the South Australian government offered a favorable administrative environment for exploration companies at the time. For its first 20 years Woodside was a minor exploration company without significant production. The company's transformation came with the discovery of the North West Shelf gas and oil fields off Western Australia in the 1960s-70s. The North West Shelf LNG project -- developed as a joint venture with Shell, BHP, BP, Chevron, and others from 1984 onward -- established Woodside as one of Australia's largest energy companies and Australia as a major LNG supplier to Japan and East Asia. Australia became the world's largest LNG exporter (briefly) and Woodside's North West Shelf trains became the cornerstone of Japan's LNG import diversification strategy. A South Australian exploration company named after a small town became critical energy infrastructure for Japanese and Korean power generation.
