Yunnan Lincang Xinyuan Germanium Industry is one of two dominant Chinese germanium companies (alongside Yunnan Chihong Zinc & Germanium), both based in Yunnan Province where China's richest germanium deposits are located. Xinyuan is vertically integrated from germanium ore processing through to finished germanium tetrachloride for fiber optic manufacturers, germanium wafers for solar cell manufacturers, and IR-grade germanium for defense optics. China together controls approximately 60% of global germanium supply; combined, Chihong and Xinyuan represent the majority of this. After China's August 2023 germanium export controls, Western fiber optic cable manufacturers (Corning, Prysmian, Sterlite), defense optics companies, and satellite solar cell producers simultaneously had to demonstrate end-use certification to obtain Chinese export licenses -- a geopolitical compliance burden that affected civilian telecommunications infrastructure, military systems, and space applications from the same regulatory event.
