Nippon Zeon was founded in 1950 in Tokyo as part of Japan's postwar synthetic rubber industry reconstruction. Japan had been almost entirely dependent on natural rubber from Southeast Asian colonies during WWII — when the Allied blockade cut those supplies, Japan's military and industrial operations were severely hampered. The postwar Japanese chemical industry prioritized synthetic rubber capability to avoid future strategic dependence on natural rubber. Nippon Zeon was established specifically to develop and produce synthetic rubber using BUNA-N (nitrile rubber) chemistry that Germany had pioneered during WWII under its own blockade-driven need to replace natural rubber. The company licensed German synthetic elastomer technology and adapted it for the Japanese market. NBR latex — the specific form of nitrile rubber used in disposable gloves — was a postwar civilian adaptation of the same chemistry that Germany developed for industrial seals and hoses during wartime. A WWII technology developed to overcome a military supply chain constraint became, through 75 years of refinement, the material that medical workers worldwide depend on to prevent pathogen transmission during patient care.
