    Polypropylene resin production and meltblown fiber extrusion

    Meltblown-grade polypropylene resin (specific melt-flow index) extruded through thousands of fine nozzles; fibers drawn by hot air jets to <5 µm diameter. China produces >50% of global PP; Sinopec is vertically integrated from PP resin into meltblown fabric. Reicofil (Germany) makes the dominant meltblown line equipment.

    Electret charging (corona discharge)

    Meltblown web passes through corona discharge field that imparts stable electrostatic charge to polypropylene fibers. This charge electrostatically captures submicron particles, allowing larger pore sizes while meeting NIOSH ≥95% filtration efficiency. Charge degrades with IPA exposure or heat — relevant to decontamination.

  3. 03

    Lamination of nonwoven layers

    5-layer N95 structure assembled: outer spunbond PP (structural) → two meltblown electret layers (filtration) → inner spunbond PP → inner facing fabric. Layers thermally or ultrasonically bonded. Surgical masks use a simpler 3-layer structure.

  4. 04

    Nose wire, straps, and shaping

    Aluminum nose wire (75–90 mm, identified suppliers almost entirely China-based) inserted and sealed. Elastic head straps (polyester/spandex) ultrasonically welded; or ear loops for KN95/surgical masks. Cup-form N95s molded to shape on thermoplastic mandrels.

    NIOSH/regulatory testing and certification

    N95s must filter ≥95% of NaCl particles (0.075 µm mean diameter at 85 L/min). NIOSH certification requires approval testing at NIOSH-accredited laboratory (CDC/NIOSH Atlanta). EU FFP2 certification via notified body. KN95 (Chinese GB 2626) tested domestically. During COVID, FDA granted Emergency Use Authorizations for KN95 and surgical masks as N95 substitutes.

    Nitrile glove NBR latex dipping and vulcanization

    For nitrile gloves: porcelain hand-form molds dipped repeatedly in Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (NBR) latex (emulsion of acrylonitrile + butadiene); chlorinated or polymer-coated for donning ease; vulcanized in ovens; stripped from forms. Malaysia produces >60% of global supply via Top Glove, Hartalega, Kossan, Supermax.
