3M Arden Hills Electret Meltblown Facility (Minnesota)
3M's Arden Hills, MN facility is the sole US production site for 3M's proprietary electret (Filtrete) meltblown polypropylene nonwoven filtration media. The site produces the charged meltblown fiber web used in all 3M N95 respirators (1860, 8210, 8110S) as well as Filtrete consumer HVAC filters. During COVID-19, 3M's inability to rapidly scale Arden Hills meltblown output was the primary bottleneck preventing faster N95 production ramp. The facility uses proprietary electret charging equipment and formulation processes that 3M has never licensed externally.
