Chemours Fayetteville Works (Nafion Primary Production)
Primary global production site for Nafion PFSA membranes, dispersions, and resins; 550+ direct jobs. Also the source of GenX (HFPO-DA) PFAS contamination of the Cape Fear River, affecting 770,000+ downstream residents since ~1980. NC DEQ 2019 Consent Order imposed emission conditions. Chemours filed permits in August 2025 to increase PFA production 33-50% (33%+ vinyl ether line increase) citing hydrogen membrane demand, while community opposition and attorney allegations of concealed emission data continue. A single North Carolina facility is the primary global source of PFSA chlor-alkali membrane material.
