Chemours' Nafion PFSA (perfluorosulfonic acid) membrane holds ~50% global market share and simultaneously enables two opposed supply chains: (1) Chlor-alkali industrial production — Nafion membrane cells electrolytically split sodium chloride (brine) to produce chlorine and sodium hydroxide; chlorine is the feedstock for PVC plastic, disinfection chlorine, and industrial chemicals; this is the petroleum-era chemical industry's core; (2) PEM fuel cells and green hydrogen electrolyzers — Nafion membrane is the proton-conducting electrolyte in hydrogen fuel cells (Toyota Mirai, Hyundai Nexo, fuel cell buses) AND in PEM electrolyzers used to produce green hydrogen from renewable electricity; green hydrogen is a key decarbonization pathway. The same Nafion membrane from Chemours' Wilmington Delaware facility: inside the industrial plants that make chlorine for PVC plastic (fossil-fuel-era material) AND inside the green hydrogen electrolyzers replacing fossil fuels AND inside fuel cell vehicles themselves. Chemours' PFAS legacy (GenX contamination, PFOA liability) coexists with its Nafion technology being one of the critical enabling materials for the hydrogen economy.

Chemours was created in July 2015 when DuPont spun off its Performance Chemicals segment — a transaction that separated DuPont's valuable specialty materials from its commodity chemicals AND from its PFAS liability legacy. DuPont's PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) contamination of Parkersburg, West Virginia's water supply (documented by attorney Robert Bilott from 1998 onward; subject of the 2019 film Dark Waters) was the most prominent PFAS case. DuPont introduced GenX (hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid, HFPO-DA) as a 'safer' replacement for PFOA in Teflon manufacturing at the Fayetteville, North Carolina plant. GenX was subsequently found to contaminate the Cape Fear River, affecting drinking water supplies for hundreds of thousands of North Carolinians. The spinoff that created Chemours transferred both the commodity chemicals business AND the accumulated PFAS liability to the new entity. Chemours has since faced hundreds of millions in PFAS-related settlements while also being constrained by AIM Act production cuts to its fluorochemical manufacturing. A company created specifically to separate a chemical legacy from a premium materials company inherited both the business and the environmental obligations.
