BPA — Grand Coulee Dam, Columbia River, Washington
Grand Coulee Dam (Columbia River, WA; 6,809 MW nameplate — largest US hydropower plant) is operated by the Bureau of Reclamation but power is marketed by BPA. Grand Coulee was historically the primary power source for Pacific Northwest World War II-era aluminum smelters (wartime aluminum for aircraft manufacturing). BPA's Columbia River system (including Bonneville Dam, The Dalles, John Day) powers the Pacific Northwest's residual aluminum and other electrochemical industries. BPA signed emergency power interruption agreements with aluminum smelters during the 2000-2001 Western energy crisis, paying smelters to curtail — demonstrating the grid's role as both supplier and demand-management tool.
