Hydro-Québec — La Grande Complex (James Bay), Quebec
The La Grande Complex (James Bay project; 8 generating stations; ~16,000 MW installed capacity) is North America's largest hydroelectric development — built 1971-1996 and expanded through LG-1 through LG-4 and associated projects. It generates the bulk of Hydro-Québec's electricity used to power Quebec's aluminum smelters. The James Bay territory is Cree First Nation land — the original 1975 James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement (JBNQA) was landmark indigenous land rights settlement. Disruption of James Bay complex (extreme low water years, ice dam events) would directly curtail Quebec aluminum production.
