Facility
Suncor Oil Sands — Fort McMurray, Alberta
Suncor's primary oil sands upgrading facility. 800,000+ MT/year of marketable elemental sulfur produced annually. Sulfur formed into blocks/prills, shipped via rail to Port of Vancouver for export. Oil sands bitumen sulfur content: ~5%. Fort McMurray area also hosts CNRL Horizon, Syncrude Mildred Lake, and Cenovus Christina Lake — together producing ~3M MT/year of Alberta sulfur. Fort McMurray area is an existential chokepoint: one of the world's densest concentrations of sulfur-rich oil processing, all at risk from Alberta wildfire (the 2016 'Fort Mac' wildfire forced 90,000 evacuations and shut production).
