Title 10 › Subtitle Subtitle E— Reserve Components › Part III— PROMOTION AND RETENTION OF OFFICERS ON THE RESERVE ACTIVE-STATUS LIST › Chapter 1407— FAILURE OF SELECTION FOR PROMOTION AND INVOLUNTARY SEPARATION › § 14511
Reserve reserve officers must leave service on the last day of the month they turn 64, unless they already retired, moved to the Retired Reserve, or were discharged earlier. This applies to Army, Air Force, and Marine Corps officers of major general rank or higher and Navy officers of rear admiral rank or higher, and the separation follows section 14515. Officers one rank higher (lieutenant general or general for Army/Air Force/Marines; vice admiral or admiral for Navy) can have that separation delayed. The President can delay it only until the first day of the month after the officer turns 68. The Secretary of Defense can delay it only until the first day of the month after the officer turns 66. This does not apply to officers covered by section 14512.
