Title 10 › Subtitle A — General Military Law › PART IV — SERVICE, SUPPLY, AND PROPERTY › CHAPTER 152 — ISSUE OF SUPPLIES, SERVICES, AND FACILITIES › § 2564
The Secretary of Defense can let military commanders help federal, state, or local law enforcement or safety agencies with security at big civilian sports events (for example, the World Cup, Goodwill Games, and the Olympics) when those agencies ask for help and the Attorney General certifies that the help is needed for safety. The Secretary can also allow other kinds of help for those events only if the needs cannot reasonably be met by someone else, the help will not hurt military readiness, and the group asking agrees to repay the Department in line with section 277 and other laws. The Secretary may set terms to protect U.S. interests, and any help is subject to sections 275 and 276 of this title. The rule does not apply to events with funds appropriated before September 23, 1996, the Special Olympics, the Paralympics, events sanctioned through the Paralympic Military Program by the U.S. Olympic Committee, or certain other national or international Paralympic events that meet specific size and participant rules (held in the United States or its territories, governed by the International Paralympic Committee, sanctioned by the U.S. Olympic Committee, with more than 100 amateur athletes and at least 10 percent of athletes being current or former service members competing because of service-related injury or disability). Funding for events described in paragraph (4) or (5) of subsection (c) may come from the Support for International Sporting Competitions, Defense account created by section 5802 of the Omnibus Consolidated Appropriations Act, 1997 (Public Law 104–208; 10 U.S.C. 2564 note), and total spending in any fiscal year for events in subsection (c)(5) may not exceed $1,000,000.
