Title 10 › Subtitle Subtitle B— Army › Part III— TRAINING › Chapter 751— TRAINING GENERALLY › § 7421
The Commandant of the United States Army War College may grant degrees to graduates who meet the college’s requirements, if the faculty and dean recommend it and the Secretary of the Army has set rules for doing so. A degree can only be awarded if the Secretary of Education has recommended approval under the Federal Policy Governing Granting of Academic Degrees by Federal Agencies, and if the War College is accredited by the appropriate civilian accrediting agency or organization as the Secretary of Education decides. When the War College seeks degree authority, the Secretary of Defense must give the Senate and House Armed Services Committees a copy of the self‑assessment sent to the Department of Education’s National Advisory Committee on Institutional Quality and Integrity and the Secretary of Education’s recommendations and reasons. If degree authority is changed or renamed, the Secretary of Defense must report the reasons and any Education Department recommendation. The Secretary of Defense must also report why an accrediting agency decided not to accredit the War College for any new or existing degree.
