Title 10 › Subtitle Subtitle C— Navy and Marine Corps › Part III— EDUCATION AND TRAINING › Chapter 855— UNITED STATES NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL › § 8548
The Naval Postgraduate School may award academic degrees to graduates who meet the school’s requirements. The school’s president can grant a degree if the faculty recommends it and the Secretary of the Navy’s rules are followed. A degree can be given only if the Secretary of Education approves it under the federal policy on federal agencies giving degrees, and if a civilian accrediting agency has accredited the school to award that degree, as the Education Secretary decides. When the school seeks new or changed degree authority, the Secretary of Defense must report to the Senate and House Armed Services Committees the self‑assessment sent to the Department of Education’s advisory body, the Education Secretary’s recommendations and reasons, and any explanation if an accrediting agency refuses to accredit the school for a new or existing degree.
