The Auxiliary helps the Coast Guard with any task, duty, mission, or operation the Commandant allows and that the law permits. The Auxiliary may patrol a waterway only if the Commandant finds it navigable for Coast Guard jurisdiction, or if a State or other proper authority requests the patrol under section 701 of this title or section 13109 of title 46.
