Title 16 › Chapter 1— NATIONAL PARKS, MILITARY PARKS, MONUMENTS, AND SEASHORES › Subchapter LIX–Y— CALIFORNIA DESERT LANDS PARKS, PRESERVE, AND OFF-HIGHWAY VEHICLE RECREATION AREAS › Part D— Miscellaneous Provisions › § 410aaa–76
Congress reserves enough water for each wilderness area created by this Act, unless section 204 says otherwise. The priority date for those reserved water rights is October 31, 1994. The Secretary and other U.S. officials must protect those rights, including filing claims to determine how much water is reserved in any present or future California stream water court where the United States is or can be joined, using section 666 of title 43. The Act does not give up or reduce any U.S. water rights in California that existed on or before October 31, 1994. The reserved federal water rights apply only to the California wilderness areas named here and do not create a rule or change the meaning of other laws or future designations.
