If someone, trying to cause death or serious harm, takes or tries to take a motor vehicle from a person by force, threats, or violence—and the vehicle crossed state lines or came from another country—they face federal punishment. They can be fined and jailed up to 15 years; up to 25 years if serious injury results (see section 1365, including conduct covered by sections 2241 or 2242 in special U.S. jurisdictions); and if death results, they can be fined, imprisoned for any number of years up to life, or sentenced to death.
