Title 20 › Chapter 70— STRENGTHENING AND IMPROVEMENT OF ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOLS › Subchapter VI— INDIAN, NATIVE HAWAIIAN, AND ALASKA NATIVE EDUCATION › Part C— Alaska Native Education › § 7542
The Federal Government must boost Alaska Native leadership and involvement in planning and running Alaska Native education programs. It must also back efforts made by Alaska Native communities to improve schooling for all students. Many Alaska Native children face serious education gaps. Long distances, past unfair treatment, and other barriers make improving results hard. Alaska Native students still have lower graduation rates, higher dropout rates, and lower test scores. Keeping Alaska Native cultures and languages in schools and using local, culture-based programs is key. Better education helps people get jobs. In 1983, under Public Law 98–63, Alaska stopped getting education funding from the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The Bureau of Indian Education does not run or fund schools or Alaska Native education programs in Alaska. This program helps meet the Federal Government’s trust responsibility to Alaska Natives.
