People and businesses must not slaughter, prepare, sell, transport, or hold meat from cattle, sheep, pigs, goats, horses, mules, or other equine animals for commerce unless they follow the rules in this chapter. Slaughter and handling must also meet the Act of August 27, 1958 (72 Stat. 862; 7 U.S.C. 1901–1906). No one may sell or ship meat in commerce that is unsafe, contaminated, or wrongly labeled, or sell meat that was required to be inspected but has not been inspected and passed. While meat is being shipped or held for sale, people must not do anything that makes it unsafe or wrongly labeled.
