Defines key words used for the Police Corps and Law Enforcement Education program. Academic year means a normal school year that starts in August or September and ends the next May or June. Dependent child means a natural, adopted, or stepchild of a law enforcement officer who, when the officer died, was 21 years old or younger, or if older than 21 was receiving at least one-half of their support from the parents (not counting educational expenses), as decided by the Director. Director means the Director of the Office of the Police Corps and Law Enforcement Education appointed under section 12553 of this title. Educational expenses are costs tied to a bachelor’s or graduate degree program that prepares someone for police work, including tuition, fees, books, supplies, travel, room and board, and other related costs, as judged appropriate by the State or local police force where the person will serve. Institution of higher education has the meaning given in the first sentence of section 1001 of title 20. Participant means someone chosen for the Police Corps program under section 12555 of this title. State includes the States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Guam, and the Northern Mariana Islands. State Police Corps program means a State-run program that meets the requirements of section 12559 of this title.
