Title 42 › Chapter 163— RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT, COMPETITION, AND INNOVATION › Subchapter III— NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION FOR THE FUTURE › Part C— Broadening Participation › § 19017
The Director must award grants after competitive review to colleges, nonprofits, or groups of them so they can help more women and underrepresented minorities enter and stay in STEM studies and careers. Grant money can be used for things like research that analyzes detailed data (with privacy protections), studies of work-life policies, evaluations of policies, mentoring programs that connect STEM professionals with students, hands-on research experiences for college students, and outreach to elementary and high school students to raise interest in STEM. The Director must also share and promote proven practices by working with other federal research agencies, professional groups, and colleges to align and spread effective work-life accommodation policies. Congress authorizes $5,000,000 for each of fiscal years 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026, and 2027 to carry out this work.
