§9902 Definitions

Summary

Sets plain meanings for key words used in this chapter. Eligible entity means an organization that was already eligible on the day before October 27, 1998, or that is later designated under section 9909, and that has the tripartite board or other governing mechanism called for in section 9910(a) or (b). Family literacy services has the meaning given in section 9832. Poverty line means the official OMB poverty threshold based on the latest Census data; the Secretary must update it at least yearly (or more often if feasible) by multiplying the official line by the percent change in the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers for the prior period, and a State may set its limit up to 125 percent of that line. Private, nonprofit organization includes religious groups (section 9920 applies). Secretary means the Secretary of Health and Human Services. State means each State, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and the Northern Mariana Islands.
