Title 43 › Chapter 46— GEOSPATIAL DATA › § 2801
Defines key words used in this chapter about geospatial data. It tells what each important term refers to. "Advisory Committee" is the National Geospatial Advisory Committee. "Committee" is the Federal Geographic Data Committee. A "covered agency" is an Executive department that handles geospatial data to do its work, plus NASA and the General Services Administration, but it does not include the Department of Defense or any part of the intelligence community. "GeoPlatform" is the system described later in the law. "Geospatial data" is information tied to a place on Earth, from maps, remote sensing, images, or similar sources, and it includes raster and vector datasets; it does not include certain tribal data not done with federal funds, classified national-security geospatial data of the Department of Defense or Department of Energy unless declassified, data covered by chapter 22 of title 10 or section 3045 of title 50, intelligence geospatial data as the Director of National Intelligence defines it, or certain other declassified intelligence-related data as settled by the defense, energy, or intelligence heads. "Indian tribe," "institution of higher education," and "intelligence community" use the meanings from other federal laws. A "lead covered agency" is the lead for a National Geospatial Data Asset theme. "Local government" means cities, counties, towns, and similar units. "Metadata for geospatial data" is information about the data such as source, age, accuracy, and how it was collected. A "National Geospatial Data Asset data theme" is a core geospatial dataset designated under the law. "National Spatial Data Infrastructure" is the technology, rules, standards, and people needed to share geospatial data across federal, state, tribal, local, and private sectors. "Proven practices" are methods that improve how geospatial data is used for the public good.
