The Secretary must order extra inspections beyond other required checks. Every vessel that needs inspection must be checked at the right times to make sure it follows the law and rules. The crew’s living areas on those vessels must be inspected at least once a month or whenever the ship enters United States ports. Inspectors must make sure the spaces meet required size rules, are well ventilated and clean, and have the required plumbing and mechanical equipment that work properly.
