Title 46 › Subtitle Subtitle II— Vessels and Seamen › Part B— Inspection and Regulation of Vessels › Chapter 33— INSPECTION GENERALLY › § 3309
When a vessel passes the inspection under section 3307, the Secretary must give it a certificate of inspection in the form the Secretary sets. The Secretary may also issue a temporary certificate instead of a regular one. At least 30 days before a certificate expires, the owner or person in charge (for example, a charterer, operator, agent, or master) must send the Secretary written notice saying the vessel will need an inspection or will not operate in a way that needs one. The certificate must be signed by the senior Coast Guard inspector (or civilian inspector) who inspected the vessel and by the officer in charge of marine inspection.
