Title 5 › Part III— EMPLOYEES › Subpart D— Pay and Allowances › Chapter 57— TRAVEL, TRANSPORTATION, AND SUBSISTENCE › Subchapter II— TRAVEL AND TRANSPORTATION EXPENSES; NEW APPOINTEES, STUDENT TRAINEES, AND TRANSFERRED EMPLOYEES › § 5724d
Under rules the President sets, an agency head (or someone they pick) can decide that a covered employee died from a job-related injury and pay certain costs from government money. The agency can pay moving costs for the employee’s immediate family if the family will live somewhere different and inside the United States. The agency can also pay to prepare and move the body to the family’s new home or to another burial place the agency chooses. The agency cannot pay these costs if they are already paid under section 5742 or any other government authority. "Covered employee" means a law enforcement officer, other FBI employees, a Customs and Border Protection officer, or a nuclear materials courier. "Qualified expense" means family travel and the cost of moving household goods and personal belongings (including packing, crating, temporary storage, and unpacking) up to 18,000 pounds net weight, and, if approved, moving one privately owned vehicle.
