Title 5 › Part III— EMPLOYEES › Subpart G— Insurance and Annuities › Chapter 81— COMPENSATION FOR WORK INJURIES › Subchapter I— GENERALLY › § 8151
When a federal employee comes back to federal work, all the time they were paid under this program must count toward pay step increases, job retention, and other benefits that depend on length of service. Under rules from the Office of Personnel Management, if the injury or disability ends within one year after compensation began (including a recurrence that starts after the employee returned to regular full‑time work), the last agency must immediately put the employee back in their former or an equivalent job and restore rights like tenure, promotion, and layoff protection. If the disability ends after more than one year, the agency must make reasonable efforts and give placement priority in that agency or another.
