The Secretary must run performance-based research, education, and technical help to promote use of innovative wood products in U.S. building construction. Work must be done with input and collaboration from the wood products industry, conservation groups, and colleges. The Secretary will do work at the Forest Products Laboratory or through the State and Private Forestry deputy area, and will award competitive grants to colleges. All work must meet measurable performance goals tied to the priorities below. Priority research areas include improving commercialization, testing safety of tall wood building materials, having the Forest Products Laboratory calculate the full lifecycle environmental footprint from raw material extraction through manufacturing for tall wood buildings, finding ways to reduce that footprint, studying effects on wildlife, and one or more other topics the Secretary picks with partners. To the maximum extent practicable, those goals should be achievable within 5 years.
