The Consumer Product Safety Commission wants to study how slippery bathtubs are to help create safer bathtubs and showers. They’re asking the public to share their thoughts by March 7, 2025, before collecting any info. This study could lead to better safety rules but won’t cost you anything directly.

Study will inform new safety standard

CPSC will use the study results to inform work with the ASTM F15.03 Committee to replace the withdrawn ASTM F462 standard and to help develop a voluntary Safety Standard for Bathtub and Shower Structure. The study's goal is to quantify minimum friction needed to reduce slips and falls.

You can be paid $100 to participate

If you participate in the bathtub slip resistance study, you will receive $100 for participation. The study expects up to 200 respondents per year (up to 600 over three years).

Participation requires about 2.5 hours

Each respondent is expected to spend about 2.5 hours to fully participate in the study. CPSC estimates an annual response burden of 500 hours (200 responses × 2.5 hours) for the study.

Recruitment limited to Phoenix metro area

Participants will be recruited from the Phoenix, Arizona metro area and experiments will be conducted at Arizona State University's Locomotion Research Laboratory. The study expects up to 200 respondents per year and up to 600 respondents over a three-year approval period.
