Basket to be Returned to Cherokee
The Bureau of Indian Affairs intends to repatriate one basket, identified as an object of cultural patrimony with a cultural affiliation to the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. The repatriation may occur on or after February 18, 2025; the basket was likely acquired in the 1970s and was on exhibit at the BIA Cherokee Agency for more than 30 years and was used decades ago to transport infants.
Who May Request the Basket
Any lineal descendant, Indian Tribe, or Native Hawaiian organization may submit a written request to repatriate the basket if they show by a preponderance of the evidence they are a lineal descendant or culturally affiliated. Repatriation may occur on or after February 18, 2025, and if competing requests are received the Bureau of Indian Affairs will determine the most appropriate requestor; joint requests are treated as a single request.
