FBI Identifies Remains Affiliated to Mescalero Apache

The Federal Bureau of Investigation, Portland Maine Resident Agency found human remains representing at least one individual and an associated beaded pipe bag and determined they are reasonably affiliated with the Mescalero Apache Tribe of the Mescalero Reservation, New Mexico.

Repatriation Eligible Beginning February 18, 2025

Repatriation of the identified human remains and the beaded pipe bag may occur on or after February 18, 2025. Written repatriation requests may be submitted to the FBI Maine by any of the tribes or Native Hawaiian organizations identified in the notice, by any lineal descendant, or by an Indian Tribe or organization not identified that proves cultural affiliation by a preponderance of the evidence; if competing requests are received, the FBI Maine will determine the most appropriate requestor.
