Mexico Gets Tariff Reprieve: Southern Border Fight Paused Till March

Published Date: 2/10/2025

Presidential Document

Summary

The U.S. government is pressing pause on new 25% tariffs against Mexico to see if Mexico’s recent efforts to fight drug trafficking and illegal migration work. This affects trade and border security, giving Mexico until March 4, 2025, to prove progress before tariffs kick in. It’s a smart move to protect the economy while encouraging real action on border safety.

Tariffs Can Be Immediately Implemented If Conditions Worsen

The Order states that if illegal migration and illicit drug crises worsen or if the Government of Mexico fails to take sufficient steps, the President shall take necessary steps including immediate implementation of the tariffs described in the February 1, 2025 Executive Order. That means the 25 percent ad valorem duties could be imposed before March 4, 2025 if conditions deteriorate.

25% Mexico Tariff Paused Until March 4

The Executive Order pauses the additional 25 percent ad valorem tariff on articles that are products of Mexico and delays the tariff taking effect until March 4, 2025 at 12:01 a.m. eastern time. During the pause, the government will continue to assess progress by Mexico before deciding whether to implement the tariff.

Exceptions for In-Transit Goods Withdrawn

The Order withdraws the exceptions that had applied to covered goods loaded onto a vessel at a port of entry or in transit on the final mode of transport prior to entry into the United States. That change removes those previously-stated exceptions from the related February 1, 2025 Executive Order.
