Rusty Pennsylvania Gas Well Gets Safe Send-Off Without Fuss

Published Date: 2/18/2025

Notice

Summary

National Fuel Gas Supply Corporation wants to safely close and abandon an old gas well and its pipeline in Pennsylvania because it’s corroded and can’t be fixed. This won’t affect customers or current gas service, but it’s a costly job—worth nearly a million dollars if built new today. People have until a set deadline to speak up or protest this plan.

Planned abandonment of Well 2430 in Pennsylvania

National Fuel Gas Supply Corporation has requested authorization to plug and abandon injection/withdrawal Well 2430 and abandon the associated 345 feet of 4-inch well line DW2430 in the Wellendorf Storage Field in McKean County, Pennsylvania. NFG states the well has localized corrosion, reworking is not feasible, the abandonment would include removal of the below-grade pipeline drip and flange, would not impact NFG's existing customers or operations, and that constructing similar facilities today would cost approximately $958,000.
