Agencies Freed to Choose Lower‑Cost Offices
Executive Order 14274 (signed April 15, 2025) revokes Executive Orders 12072 (Aug 16, 1978) and 13006 (May 21, 1996), removing requirements that prioritized central business districts and certain historic properties. This lets federal agencies select more cost‑effective office space, which the order says will free agencies to save money for taxpayers.
Federal Offices Encouraged Closer to People
The order directs executive departments and agencies to be located 'where the people are' so they can provide the highest quality services in an efficient and cost‑effective manner. By removing prior siting priorities, agencies are encouraged to locate offices closer to where people live to improve service delivery.
