Natural Gas and LNG Declared Critical

On April 20, 2026, the President determined that natural gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG) capacity — including gathering and transmission pipelines, compression, processing plants, underground storage, LNG liquefaction, storage and marine load, export facilities, and critical distribution infrastructure — are industrial resources essential to national defense under section 303 of the Defense Production Act.

Secretary Authorized to Fund and Expedite Projects

The Secretary of Energy is authorized to implement this determination and may make purchases, purchase commitments, and provide financial support or other instruments to enable projects that expand natural gas transmission, processing, storage, and LNG capacity. The President also waived the requirements of section 303(a)(1)–(a)(6) of the Defense Production Act for that purpose, effective April 20, 2026.
