Default Repayment Plan If You Don’t Choose

If you have a federal Direct Loan and you do not pick an initial repayment plan, you will be placed on the Standard Repayment Plan or the Tiered Standard Repayment Plan under 34 CFR 685.210(a)(2). This applies when you fail to make an initial plan selection before your loans enter repayment.

Repayment-Plan Form Revised for OBBBA

The Department of Education proposes revising the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program Repayment Plan Selection Form to include new regulatory requirements from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed July 4, 2025. The form is used to choose an initial fixed payment plan under 34 CFR 685.208 and to request plan changes after repayment begins; the agency estimates 660,000 annual responses and 110,220 annual burden hours and is accepting comments through June 16, 2026.
