Statutory Changes Affecting New Direct Loans

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (signed July 4, 2025) made statutory changes that affect borrower eligibility, terms, and rights for Direct Loans received on or after July 1, 2026. These changes apply specifically to Direct Loans originated on or after July 1, 2026.

IDR Form Adds Repayment Assistance Option

If you have federal student loans, the Department is updating the Income-Driven Repayment (IDR) Request Form to add the Repayment Assistance Plan as a selectable option and to change family-size questions so you can report the number of dependents. The updated form will explain the Repayment Assistance Plan terms and help borrowers enroll, recertify, or change plans.

SAVE Plan Invalidated March 10, 2026

The court action effective March 10, 2026 invalidated the SAVE Plan (formerly REPAYE). If you were enrolled in SAVE, that plan has been removed as of March 10, 2026.

PAYE and ICR Sunsetting by July 1, 2028

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act requires that the PAYE and ICR income-contingent repayment plans be sunset by July 1, 2028. If you are on PAYE or ICR, those plans will no longer be available after July 1, 2028.
