Federal backing for coal supply chains

On April 20, 2026 the President authorized the federal government to provide purchases, purchase commitments, and financial support to expand coal supply chains and baseload power generation. The support can cover coal mining, rail and barge logistics, export and domestic terminals, generating unit life-extension work, on-site stockpiles, and related reliability updates to help keep electricity supply steady for defense and critical uses.

Waiver to speed coal-related actions

The President waived the requirements of section 303(a)(1)–(a)(6) of the Defense Production Act to allow faster implementation of actions that expand coal supply chain capacity and baseload generation availability. This waiver authorizes the Secretary of Energy to take expedited measures to avert a shortfall that would impair national defense capability.
