U.S. Grid Gear Gets Defense Boost Against Foreign Suppliers

Published Date: 4/23/2026

Presidential Document

Summary

The President has declared that America’s electric grid and its parts—like transformers and power lines—are super important for national defense but are at risk because we rely too much on foreign suppliers. To fix this, the government will boost U.S. production and supply chains to make sure we have the gear we need, right when we need it. This means faster manufacturing and stronger energy security starting now, with big support and funding behind it.

Grid Equipment Declared Critical

On April 20, 2026, the President determined that grid infrastructure and upstream supply chains are industrial resources essential to national defense. The determination explicitly lists transformers, transmission lines and conductors, substations, high-voltage circuit breakers, power control electronics, protective relay systems, capacitor banks, electrical core steel, and related raw materials and manufacturing tools as covered items.

Secretary Authorized to Purchase and Finance Production

The Secretary of Energy is authorized to implement this determination and to make purchases, purchase commitments, and provide financial support or other instruments to expand domestic production and supply chains for grid infrastructure. The President also waived the requirements of section 303(a)(1)-(6) of the Defense Production Act for the purpose of expanding such capability (decision dated April 20, 2026).
