Improves Pipeline Safety and Cold‑Weather Reliability

You (the public) will benefit from maintained or improved pipeline safety and better low‑temperature performance because the updated ASTM A333/A333M‑24 covers steel pipe for low‑temperature service and required notch toughness. PHMSA says these updates enhance tests and inspections and will help prevent safety gaps.

Pipelines Must Use ASTM A333/A333M‑24

If you operate or own pipeline facilities, PHMSA requires using the updated ASTM A333/A333M‑24 steel pipe standard starting January 1, 2027. The updated standard replaces the ASTM A333/A333M‑18 references in 49 CFR Sec. 192.113, Appendix B to part 192, and Sec. 195.106(e); you may begin complying after June 23, 2026 and may submit comments by June 23, 2026.

Expected Small Net Savings for Operators

PHMSA expects the regulatory change will reduce regulatory uncertainty and produce small net cost savings for the regulated community. The agency states the action is deregulatory, estimates total costs for the regulated community will be "less than zero," and notes cost savings could not be quantified.
