Pipelines Go Old-School: No More Email, Just Pick Up the Phone!
Published Date: 4/24/2026
Rule
Summary
Gas pipeline operators now have to report incidents by phone only, not by email or online, because the National Response Center stopped accepting electronic reports. This change makes reporting faster and clearer, starting August 3, 2026. It affects all gas pipeline operators but won’t cost extra money—just a simpler way to keep everyone safe!

Phone‑Only Incident Reporting
If you operate a gas pipeline facility, you must report certain incidents to the National Response Center by telephone only starting August 3, 2026. Calls must be made to 800-424-8802 or, in Washington, DC, to 202-267-2675; references to electronic submissions have been removed.
Paperwork Revision for Reporting Forms
PHMSA will request a revision to the information collection for OMB Control Number 2137-0635 to reflect the change in how operators notify the NRC. This action updates reporting instructions but PHMSA says it will not impose new reporting burdens.
