Mine Operators' 30-Day Reporting Duty

Under the MSHA Respirable Crystalline Silica final rule, metal and nonmetal (MNM) mine operators must ensure medical examination results, including chest x-ray classifications, are provided to NIOSH by the examining physician or licensed provider within 30 days after NIOSH establishes a reporting system. This CDC/NIOSH collection enables that required transmission of results.

Clinics Must Submit X-ray Data

Medical clinics and their staff will submit de-identified chest x-ray classifications for metal and nonmetal miners to NIOSH using a web-based system (REDCap). CDC estimates each x-ray classification takes about 2 minutes to submit, clinics may submit about 40 classifications per year, and total estimated annual burden is 457 hours across an estimated 338 clinics.

De-identified Data Used for Surveillance

NIOSH will collect de-identified chest x-ray classification data from medical providers and aggregate it by state and commodity to support public health surveillance of miners. The collection aligns with MSHA regulatory action and is intended to track radiographic classifications for metal and nonmetal miners.
