Boeing 787 Water Woes: FAA Requires Strap Inspections and Replacements
Published Date: 4/29/2026
Rule
Summary
The FAA is updating safety rules for certain Boeing 787 airplanes to fix water system parts that might be missing safety straps. Pilots and maintenance crews must inspect and replace these parts by June 3, 2026, to keep flights safe and avoid costly repairs later. This update keeps old rules but adds new checks and bans installing unsafe parts.

5 provisions identified: 3 benefits, 2 costs, 0 mixed.
Mandatory inspections of 787 water couplings
If you operate or work on Boeing 787-8, 787-9, or 787-10 airplanes, you must do detailed inspections of all clamshell couplings for safety straps at door 1 and door 3 lavatories and galleys per Boeing Alert Requirements Bulletins. The AD is effective June 3, 2026 and retains prior inspection requirements while adding new inspection locations and on-condition actions.
FAA estimates: 165 U.S. airplanes affected
The FAA estimates this AD affects 165 U.S.-registered Boeing 787 airplanes. The retained clamshell coupling inspection is estimated at 1 work-hour x $85 = $85 per lavatory/galley (total cost on U.S. operators $14,025). The new safety strap inspection is estimated at 27 work-hours x $85 = $2,295 per lavatory/galley and the FAA estimates $238,680 for 104 airplanes.
On-condition repair and replacement cost estimates
If inspections find issues, on-condition actions include correcting an incorrectly installed safety strap (1 work-hour = $85 per lavatory/galley) or installing a clamshell coupling with a strap and performing a leak test (4 work-hours = $340 plus parts up to $267, up to $607 per lavatory/galley). The AD does not estimate how many airplanes will need on-condition work.
Ban on installing two unsafe coupling part numbers
As of June 3, 2026, the AD prohibits installing clamshell coupling P/N 14C02-08C (AS1655C08) or P/N 14C02-08A (AS1655A08) at inspection locations where the part was replaced with P/N 14C34-08C or P/N 14C33-08. The prohibition applies to all airplanes in the AD applicability.
787-10 included in parts prohibition
Model 787-10 airplanes are included in the AD applicability for the Parts Installation Prohibition so the ban on installing the identified affected parts applies to 787-10 airplanes as of June 3, 2026, even if some 787-10 airplanes were not previously inspected under the earlier AD.
