Chehalis Basket Returned to Tribal Nation
The Longyear Museum of Anthropology at Colgate University intends to repatriate one cylindrical coiled basket identified as Chehalis (c. 1940s) to the Confederated Tribes of the Chehalis Reservation. The repatriation may occur on or after June 4, 2026; the museum purchased the basket on an electronic marketplace (eBay) in 2008.
Who May Request Repatriation
Any lineal descendant, Indian Tribe, or Native Hawaiian organization not identified in the notice may submit a written request for repatriation if they show by a preponderance of the evidence that they are a lineal descendant or culturally affiliated. Requests must be sent to Kelsey Olney-Wall, Repatriation Manager, Colgate University, University Museums, 13 Oak Drive, Hamilton, NY 13346 (email provided in the notice); repatriation may occur on or after June 4, 2026, and competing requests will be resolved by the museum before repatriation.
