Yale to Return Eight Chumash Artifacts
The Yale Peabody Museum intends to return eight Native American unassociated funerary objects (lots of stone mortars, stone pestles, stone weights, and stone bowls) that are culturally affiliated with the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Mission Indians. The repatriation may occur on or after June 11, 2026.
Who Can Request Repatriation
Any lineal descendant, Indian Tribe, or Native Hawaiian organization may submit a written request for repatriation by showing, by a preponderance of the evidence, that they are a lineal descendant or culturally affiliated. Requests must be sent to the Yale Peabody Museum contact named in the notice; the museum will decide among competing requests and treats joint requests as a single request. Repatriation to an accepted requestor may occur on or after June 11, 2026.
