FAA Orders Flap System Checks for ATR Airplanes

Published Date: 5/14/2026

Rule

Summary

If you fly or maintain ATR42 airplanes, listen up! The FAA found a problem with the flap system that could cause safety issues, so they’re requiring a special inspection and fixes starting June 18, 2026. This keeps flights safe without breaking the bank, but owners need to act on time to avoid trouble.

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 2 costs, 0 mixed.

Mandatory ATR42 flap inspection

If you operate or maintain ATR42-200, -300, or -320 airplanes, you must perform a special detailed inspection (SDI) of the flap asymmetry detection mechanism and accomplish any required corrective actions in accordance with EASA AD 2025-0087. This AD is effective June 18, 2026.

Estimated compliance cost to U.S. operators

The FAA estimates this AD affects 17 U.S.-registered ATR42 airplanes. The FAA estimates the required inspection will take 2 work-hours at $85 per hour (=$170 per airplane) for a total estimated cost to U.S. operators of $2,890; the FAA did not provide cost estimates for any on-condition corrective actions.

No manufacturer reporting required

EASA AD 2025-0087 asks operators to submit certain information to the manufacturer, but this FAA AD explicitly does not include that reporting requirement. That means you are not required by this FAA AD to send those reports to the manufacturer.
