Temporary mortgage pause for disaster survivors

If enacted, you would be able to ask your mortgage servicer for a 180-day forbearance. This would apply if your home in a presidentially declared disaster area was damaged or destroyed. You must submit a written request and proof of verifiable damage during the disaster declaration period. The servicer would have to grant the 180-day pause, even if your loan is not delinquent, and you could ask for one 180-day extension. During the pause, no extra fees, penalties, or interest beyond what you'd owe if you had paid on time would accrue. Covered loans would be non-temporary single-family or multifamily loans bought or securitized by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac; construction loans would be excluded.
